About “In the Beginning was the Word” painting

We often hear these verses at Christmas Carol services, and in the winter-time, it is comforting to think of the light that shines in the darkness. It makes us think of good triumphing over evil, even though the world we live in is far from perfect.

For me, these verses go further and deeper than just a comforting idea. The origin of all creative energy is the inspiration for this painting. God intentionally created this world and humanity to be good, and he has made a relationship with him possible for us, through coming to us in the form of a man, Jesus Christ, his Son.

These words are about Jesus Christ. He is the Word of God. It’s so easy to receive his forgiveness, blessing, love, peace and life, if we say a sincere “yes” to Him in our heart. The Epistle of Paul to the Colossians affirms this essential truth.

Colossians 1:15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. 17 And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.

It is my heartfelt conviction that without recognising God in Jesus Christ, life cannot make sense and we cannot understand ourselves. Everything that exists – whether on a physical or subatomic level – was created through Him. And since human beings have been made in the image of God (Genesis 1:26), that means it is normal for us to be endlessly creative as well. What a fascinating thought for an artist!

It’s been proved by scientists that at the moment of human conception, there’s a flash of light. Many believe this is the spirit being formed in the embryo. The light of God in Jesus Christ is in each one of us. I pray that His light will shine brighter in you today, and that you receive everything you need from Him to live a pure and productive life in front of Him.
